Scholarship Programme

About the Scholarship Programme

Thanks to the generous support from local Lions and Rotary Clubs, the Wairarapa Youth Orchestra (WYO) can offer affordable music lessons for students in the Wairarapa.

The WYO Scholarship Music Lessons are designed to provide high-quality music education to students who may not otherwise have the opportunity.

The programme aims to:

Encourage musical development and a love of music in young people.
Support students who are showing potential and enthusiasm for music, regardless of financial circumstances.
Provide access to professional tutors and quality instruments.
Offer lessons that complement participation in WYO ensembles, helping students grow both individually and as part of a group.

Scholarships are available throughout the year on a rolling basis, depending on space and funding. Applications are reviewed as they are received.

Lesson Information

Lessons cost $10 per lesson for each student ($70 a term).
There are seven lessons per term, beginning in week two. Lessons are organised directly with the tutors.
Lessons are held at the tutor’s studio or at another venue agreed by the tutor and the student’s family.
Parents or caregivers are responsible for transport.
Instruments and music are provided free of charge.

Orchestra Participation Requirement

As part of our scholarship programme, students are required to join the Wairarapa Youth Orchestra when they are at an appropriate level, as advised by their tutor.

There may be two terms to one year of lessons before the student is ready to join. If accepted to the scholarship programme families must be able to commit to their child joining the orchestra once they are ready.
